What Is a Fred Rock?

A Fred Rock is a Garnet-Hornblende-Schist — also known as Hornblende, it belongs to the Amphibole group — typically found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Nearly every trip a few eye catching specimens are collected by Fred himself from Rock River in Williamsville and South Newfane, Vermont. Hornblende is found throughout VT and MA.  The name was coined by Fred's partner, Alisha. In Fred's own words: "Originally called a Fred Rock by my significant other, Alisha." They're 100% local, 100% Vermont, and one of Fred's personal favorites.

Where They Come From

Rock River runs through Williamsville and South Newfane in Windham County, Vermont — the same river that first got Fred hooked on rocks. The Hornblende Schist found there is a metamorphic rock formed under intense heat and pressure deep in the Earth's crust, then brought to the surface over millions of years of erosion.
