About
Fred McKenny has been tumbling, cutting, and polishing rocks on his property in Putney, Vermont since 2016. What began as a backyard hobby has grown into a full lapidary workshop. As a member of the Keene Mineral Club, Fred has access to rockhounding sites most collectors never see. Nearly every stone in the shop has been processed right here on Pine Banks Road.

I am the owner, lapidary, and the guy behind every stone in the shop. Vermont born and raised. It started when a friend took me to Rock River in Vermont, where I filled my pockets until my pants nearly fell down. That first experience was followed by many trips, scouring for sard, carnelian, beautiful green chrysoprase and serpentine. Then I ran into a problem, the rocks lost a lot of their beauty when dry. I asked “ how can I make them look good all the time- even dry”? That’s when I was introduced to polishing and that December of 2015 my family got me a 6” CabKing (polishing machine) for Christmas. I spent hours and hours in my shop grinding, shaping and polishing rock after rock. Little did I know this was the beginning of what now is Fred’s Rock Shop - a full lapidary shop and a well stocked retail store.
